What exactly is Telepractice? In simple terms it is the use of telecommunications technology to deliver speech language pathology services at a distance by linking the clinician to the client for assessment, evaluation, intervention and/or consultation. It is not telemedicine or telehealth as typically associated in other healthcare settings.
Telepractice was approved by the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association as an appropriate method of service delivery in 2005. ASHA's position is that 'telepractice is an appropriate model of service delivery for the professions of speech-language pathology (and audiology). Telepractice may be used to overcome barriers of access to services caused by distance, unavailability of specialists and/or subspecialists, and impaired mobility'.
The use of telepractice services are equivalent to the quality of services provided in person and consistent with the ASHA Code of Ethics, with few exceptions (only by the technology itself), the telepractice services delivered are the same as any in-person meeting.
All About Bilinguals has been and will continue to support telepractice to deliver services where needed.
